Gun control – mean of crime prevention or tool of oppression?

1 Samuel 13: 19 – Not a blacksmith could be found in the whole land of Israel, because the Philistine had said, “Otherwise the Hebrews will make swords or spears!”.

When people are talking about criminals, usually they think about someone who use knife or handgun to rob people on the street or on their houses. Based on common perception in movie and mass media, criminals are depicted by using these weapons to prey on their victims. These movies and mass media make people to have negative perception about weapon. They think weapon as tool of criminals.

But of course, not all criminals are the same. Not all criminals have access to these weapons or even able to use these weapons. I don’t think that use of firearms even consist of significant portion of all crimes. The problem is that we tend to have our own favorite crimes in our head and ignoring crime of other types. This thing happens because usually for favorite crimes, the culprits are more easily identifiable and arrested.

There are three types of criminals according to difficulty to arrest its culprits. The first type is criminals who do what others would perceive as a crime without any tricks. Under this category is thieves, rapists, and gangsters. The second level criminals also commit crime but they use sophisticated scheme or technology to make more difficult for authorities to track them. Criminals in this category include hackers, loan sharks and counterfeiters. However, all these criminals are petty when you compare to  third type. The worst type of criminals are people who can convince people that what they are doing are not crime, have abilities to change the law, and often able to escape unharmed and even supported by authorities. Under this category are banksters, finance traders, CEO of big corporations and …… of course government.

Ah, of course, government! The mostly single owner of deadly weapons like nuclear missiles, jet fighters, tanks, rifles and handguns….but hey, relax! According to their own definition, they are not criminals! After all, most people think that the notion of government as criminal looks like absurd thing. We are told that normal government role’s is to protect his citizens from dangers and ensure their well-being, isn’t it?

But…..there are, ehm, some exceptions such as this, this and this. And for those who are old enough or wise enough to read history will know that in the majority of human civilizations, most government are despotic and oppressive. In the old days, most government think that their leaders have divine nature and have divine rights to rule humans. The king or emperor was not restrained by any constitution or laws because he is the law. He was accountable to no one but himself.

In the Scripture, the LORD warned Israelites when they want to create monarchy like other nations (1 Samuel 8: 6-9). As the result, the king will become oppressive by administering military service to the men (1 Samuel 8: 11-12) and cooking service for women (1 Samuel 8: 13). He will also take excessive taxation from the land and make his own citizen slaves under his rule (1 Samuel 8: 14-17). In contrast of God, who always want the best for His creation (After all, it is illogical for God to abuse His people who are created in His image, it is like saying God enjoys seeing Himself suffer), the king show less mercy to the citizens since they are not his children nor family.

Most of the times, the rulers even outside kingdom of Israel also abuse general population by imposing heavy taxation and military services in exchange for little or no payment. The taxation was used so lavishly to build king’s palace, constructing his furniture, maintaining his garden, and even to decorate his tomb and making golden coffin without little or no leftover to improve public infrastructure or education.

The threat for such government come from population that are prosperous, educated and armed. Armed and educated population can identify government propaganda and able to fight when government is abusive or genocidal. Armed population are also arguably safer than disarmed population if you think about it. Because if population are armed, they can defend themselves on spot against thieves and robbers rather than waiting for polices who will come around half an hour later (Police will not come that fast in suburban or rural areas, you know!). Safer environment without government intervention also means more freedom.

In contrast, if population are disarmed, they are less secure and need outside power to protect them from. Government will obtain more power which can be abused most of the times. After all, most genocidal government always implement gun control law before killing population. For more details about gun law of genocidal governments, see this chart

Due to all those reasons, I think it is safer for us if we have guns. But of course, we should also learn to use it. I personally wish I can learn how to use sword and firearm. But well, life cannot always like you want….Singapore government are not like Syrian, for now…
