Five types of life path in this apocalyptic age

Usually, for people who are in late twenties and thirties, the most common question and thought in their mind are about their future career, lifestyle, and dream. What kind of person you want to be remembered when you are old and die? Obviously, there is no straight forward answer to this kind of question. Standard answers like ‘doing whatever you are happy with or have passion with’ does not stand when difficulties come in since happiness and passion is quite volatile and will fluctuate with various circumstances.

I don’t pretend that I have the answer for this question in detail. However, there are several things I think we need to avoid about thinking and planning life path.

First, there are one type of people who does not care about the future and he just basically follows the trend whenever he thinks it is suitable. This is the type of people who do not care what the future (or probably will only care after it becomes too late). I do not think it is a good thing to let your circumstances dictate you to waste your time, energy and money to engage in things that are not objectively meaningful. You only have around 70-80 years old to live (provided you are not infected with SARS, H1N1, H7N9 and other infectious diseases).

Another extreme is the people who plan every single details to their life. They have agenda, target and concrete steps to accomplish them on basically everything, like dietary, exercise, office promotion, enrichment courses, finance and so on. These are the type of people who think that they have power, will and moral obligation to shape and change their own destiny.

I will consider the latter kind of people as pure manifestation of selfishness. By planning every single detail of their life, they basically want to say to all people that they need to adjust to his schedule and / or interests to be able to relate or corporate with him. Typically, these kind of people will try to convince other people by showing the achievement they got from applying this style of meticulous planning. However, he deliberately tries to forget, hide or minimize the role of other people for his success.

Having said that, in this post I want to summarize several worthy life path which have been chosen by a lot of thoughtful people around the world across all the ages. These life path will be sorted on its relative importance for its purpose. I put other people’s need oriented life path as higher than self-oriented life path.

1) Mysticism

The main target of your life is to cultivate your spiritual self, character, and / or supernatural abilities and have intimate relation with divine or supernatural beings. By doing so, you will get ultimate satisfaction for your soul regardless of all circumstances around you.

There are many ways to achieve this life path such as ascetic practices, fasting, meditation, prayer, religious rituals and offering. Some people achieve this without deliberate effort as they received divine revelation, miracles or near death experience which changed their life forever.

I consider this kind of life path as most noble as its spiritual orientation. The example of people who choose this kind of life path are Pentecostal Christians and various New Age Movement group (including even occultists and Ufologists)

2) Humanism

The greatest purpose for you is to contribute to human society to build great civilization as civilization is the pinnacle of all things in this planet. Hence, you try to acquire a lot of knowledge and try to configure a system to make better society, whether it come from religious scriptures or secular philosophy.  You also hope that you can lead or advice people to produce peace and prosperous society.

Alternatively, you are also interested in acquiring skills to produce goods and services needed by society such as fine arts, technologies and agriculture. In addition to make good amount of money, you also feel satisfaction since you are productive member of society.

Examples of people who choose this life path are Muslim and Christian fundamentalists and also a lot of secular philosophers and scientists such as Nietzsche and Marx.

3) Environmentalism

You feel that human beings, particularly all big corporations, are disease to all living creatures and its environment including animals, plants, land, water, and air. They caused unthinkable amount of misery by rampant deforestation, unrestrained oil consumption, irresponsible waste management, and so on.

You want to create happier life situation for animals, plants and planet and would like to engage in reducing your carbon footprint and campaigning for your fellow human to be responsible steward of planet earth.

Examples: Animal right activists, renewable energy and self-sufficiency advocates, vegetarians.

4) Appocalypsm

You think that humanity and also everything are on the way of destruction because of their corrupt and selfish nature and very little or nothing we can do to reverse the situation for basically this world is controlled by super-powerful and evil entities, whether it is Satan, Antichrist, United States, China, United Nations, Zionists, Freemasons, Illuminati or Big Corporation, Big Bank and Big Government.

The only thing you can do is to collect enough food, water, and ammunition for final battle against evil government who will come after you and your family during crisis and also to spread your view to other people.

5) Survival of the fittest

Very simple, I just want to be 1% of ruling class by obtaining more money, power and influence. The way to obtain this does not matter much to me and as long as I don’t commit any crime (or caught to do crime), it is perfectly OK for me to do this even if I need to sacrifice my integrity and relationship with other people.

I want to have all lands, houses, stocks, and basically all material things in this world. If possible, I also want to have special squads whom I can order to eliminate all my enemies who disagree with me. I also want to have all my needs meet with anonymous slaves (or employees) who must work for long, repetitive and unimportant menial tasks to generate money for me. Sorry but their happiness are not my concern.

Example: Basically majority of people in the world although they never say it explicitly.

After all summary above, I would hope that you will choose first three options.

The fourth one is acceptable but for me it just shows lack of faith. I also believe that there are few powerful and evil people controlling this world especially in finance world. But that does not excuse you to let off your responsibility to others and labeling people who participate in the world as evil agents will not get you anything, from God or humans.

If you choose the fifth one, then you can close this blog and continue with your life.
